Feed My People seeks to enhance food security for the homeless, veterans and low-income households across Virginia by bridging the gap to resources through a Mobile Pantry, community garden and collaborative partnerships that deliver nutritious meals to under-served populations.
We aim to unite the faith community, business leaders, food banks, grocery retailers, and restaurants, to eliminate food insecurity in Virginia's most distressed areas.
Growing up in a financially constrained household with nine siblings on the small Caribbean Island of Trinidad and Tobago profoundly shaped my dedication to serving others. Despite limited resources, we sustained ourselves by cultivating crops, raising chickens and ducks, and participating in a community garden. Our village operated on a cooperative system, where shared responsibilities ensured the well-being of chicken coops.
The village ethos of "each one feed one" prevented anyone from experiencing hunger, fostering a strong sense of communal support. Upon immigrating to America at age 10, we encountered a different mindset emphasizing individualism. Financial struggles persisted, but my mother's unwavering commitment to providing a daily hot meal sustained us, making dining out an unaffordable luxury.
Observing families like ours struggling and individuals begging for food on the streets fueled my determination to address food insecurity. Joining the military as a young adult exposed me to the stark contrast between the staggering amount of daily food waste and the prevalent hunger in the community. Legal constraints hindered us from redistributing excess food to shelters.
While stationed abroad, I realized that homelessness and hunger were not exclusive to America; instead, they were global issues. This realization served as the motivation behind my commitment. Upon retiring from the military, I was determined to make a meaningful contribution to alleviating hunger in my home state of Virginia. This resolution propelled me to engage in the crucial work of raising awareness about the persistent crisis of food insecurity and establishing a mobile feeding pantry with the mission to "Feed My People."
We aim to align with local food banks to serve severely distressed and impoverished communities experiencing food insecurity.
We will partner with local community gardens to mobilize their yields, enhancing our ability to incorporate fresh, organic produce into the diets of food-insecure families.
